La grille possède une histoire riche et complexe en art en dépit de sa simplicité trompeuse. De la perspective à la modélisation 3D, ces usages multiples rendent compte du pouvoir d’évocation du motif et de sa capacité à dialoguer avec la réalité, ses systèmes et ses structures. […]
Le dossier La Grille réunit des propositions sur l’usage de la grille – en tant que motif, composition, structure et symbole – dans les pratiques en art actuel liées à la notion polysémique de spatialité. Que reste-t-il de l’héritage moderniste et conceptuel, est-il toujours agissant dans les pratiques actuelles ? La grille se matérialise-t-elle sous une forme graphique, un système topographique, une matrice computationnelle, un entrelacement textile ? Comment s’articulent les liens entre grille et politique aujourd’hui, quelles idéologies permet-elle de révéler ? Ou entre grille et informatique, grille et bureaucratie, grille et urbanisme, grille et architecture ? Quels types d’espaces construit-elle ? Si la grille fait souvent référence aux cartographies rigides et à la rationalisation du territoire, que signifie aujourd’hui vivre « off-grid », en écho aux œuvres féministes des années 1970 ? Quels imaginaires, quelles communautés, quelles possibilités (graphiques, spatiales, temporelles) émergent de la grille ou de son dehors ?

The theme of issue 144 of ESPACE art actuel – to be published in September 2026 – is « The Grid ».
Despite its deceptive simplicity, the grid carries a rich and complex history in the arts. From linear perspective to 3D modeling, the motif’s many manifestations reveal its evocative power and its ability to engage with reality, its systems, and its structures.
The Grid issue brings together proposals on the use of the grid—as motif, composition, structure, and symbol—in contemporary art practices engaging with spatiality, either in form or content. What remains of the modernist and conceptual legacy, and is it still operative in current practices? Does the grid materialize in a graphic form, a topographical system, a computational matrix, or a textile weave? How are the links between the grid and politics articulated today, and which ideologies does it reveal? Or between the grid and information technology, the grid and bureaucracy, the grid and urban planning, the grid and architecture? What kinds of spaces does it produce? If the grid often refers to rigid cartographies and the rationalization of territory, what does it mean today to live “off-grid,” echoing the feminist works of the 1970s? What imaginaries, what communities, what possibilities—graphic, spatial, temporal—emerge from the grid or its outside?
